CABLE SELECTION & BUY GUIDE
From general knowledge to specialist cable questions - we've tried to answer them all!
Q1: What jacket material options are available for industrial cables, and how to pick?
A: PVC is cost-effective for normal indoor dry environments. PE / HDPE offers UV resistance for outdoor use. LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) is mandatory for tunnels, subway, public buildings and confined spaces, as it releases little toxic smoke during fire.
Q2: Copper or aluminum conductor for MV/HV power cables? Which one should I buy?
A: Copper conductors offer better conductivity, smaller outer diameter and higher reliability, recommended for short-distance, high-reliability industrial projects. Aluminum cables have lower material cost and lighter weight, ideal for long-distance utility power transmission. Check your project budget, space limit and local standard requirements before ordering.
Q3: What is XLPE insulation for medium voltage cables, and why is it widely used?
A: XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene) is the standard insulation material for modern MV/HV power cables. It can work continuously at 90°C, features low dielectric loss, excellent heat resistance and long service life. It performs much better than traditional PVC insulation for power transmission.
Q4: What is the difference between control cable and instrumentation cable?
A: Control cables transmit on/off switching signals for relays, contactors and cabinet control loops, usually multi-core with simple shielding. Instrumentation cables carry weak analog signals like 4-20mA for sensors and transmitters. They adopt paired twisted design plus individual & overall shielding to block EMI interference, guaranteeing accurate measurement.
Q5: Do I need shielded control cables for general factory control circuits?
A: If your cable runs near VFDs, large motors or high voltage power lines, shielded control cables are required to avoid signal disturbance. For simple low-noise cabinet internal wiring, unshielded control cables can reduce purchase cost.
Q6: Can I use control cable or instrumentation cable to carry high power load?
A: No. Control and instrument cables have thin insulation and small conductor cross-section, designed only for low-current signal transmission. They cannot bear heavy power current. Using them for power supply will cause overheating, insulation breakdown and safety hazards.
Q7: When to choose armored control / instrument cables?
A: Select armored versions for direct burial, underground pipe crossing, or locations with risk of rodent bite, rock impact and mechanical damage. Armour adds extra physical protection, while unarmored types are enough for indoor conduit or cable tray installation.
Q8: What jacket material options are available for industrial cables, and how to pick?
A: PVC is cost-effective for normal indoor dry environments.
PE / HDPE offers UV resistance for outdoor use.
LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) is mandatory for tunnels, subway, public buildings and confined spaces, as it releases little toxic smoke during fire.
CPE (Chlorinated Polyethylene) jacket has excellent ozone, weathering and aging resistance, suitable for outdoor, solar and tropical applications.
CR (Chloroprene Rubber / Neoprene) jacket features good oil, flame and abrasion resistance, widely used for flexible portable cables and mining occasions.
Silicone rubber jacket can withstand extreme high and low temperatures, remains flexible at -60°C up to 180°C, ideal for furnace, oven and high-heat industrial equipment wiring.
PUR jacket provides oil and abrasion resistance for mobile / machine moving cables.
Q9: What category of Ethernet cable should I choose for industrial network projects?
A: Cat5e supports 1Gbps up to 100m for general office network. Cat6 works for 1Gbps and short-distance 10Gbps transmission, widely used in factory automation. Cat6A supports stable 10Gbps at full 100m length, suitable for high-speed industrial data collection.
Q10: Shielded or unshielded industrial Ethernet cable?
A: Shielded twisted pair (STP / FTP) Ethernet cable is required when routed alongside power cables, motors or inverters to resist electromagnetic noise. Unshielded UTP is enough for clean office network environments with no strong interference sources.
Q11: What critical standards should I verify before placing a cable order for export projects?
A: Confirm the required standard: IEC, BS, GB, or local COC / certification requirements. Ask the cable factory to provide type test reports, factory test certificates and material data sheets. For African and Southeast Asian markets, IEC standard cables are most commonly accepted.
Q12: What is LSZH cable, and what projects require it?
A: LSZH stands for Low Smoke Zero Halogen. When burned, it releases very low smoke density and no corrosive halogen gas. It is required for underground tunnels, metro stations, hospitals, data centers and enclosed public buildings for fire safety.
Q13: What information should I prepare to get an accurate cable quotation?
A: Prepare cable type, rated voltage, conductor size, core quantity, shielding / armour requirement, jacket material, standard, required length, drum packing, installation environment and target market certification. Full specifications help suppliers avoid wrong quotation.
Q14: How to judge cable quality when sourcing from Chinese cable manufacturers?
A: Check raw material: pure copper conductor (avoid CCA copper clad aluminum), full thickness insulation and sheath. Verify test reports, partial discharge test for MV cables, and sample acceptance test. Avoid ultra-low-price cables that cut material thickness to reduce cost.
Q15: What are common installation mistakes that shorten cable service life?
A: Over-bending cable beyond minimum bending radius, overloading current, mismatched voltage grade, using non-UV cable for outdoor exposure, using unarmored cable for direct burial, and mixing signal cables with high power cables in the same tray. All these problems cause premature cable failure.
